QRGen — QR codes, ticketing, and attendance in one platform
Most QR tools stop at generating a code. QRGen adds accounts, tiered plans, Paystack billing, scan analytics, and a full events system — with QR-based tickets and a dedicated scanner for tracking attendance in real time.
The Brief
Turning a free utility into something worth paying for
Almost every QR generator online does the same thing: type a link, get a code, done. I wanted to see what happens when you treat that as a product instead of a utility — accounts people log into, plans that unlock more, analytics that show whether a code is actually getting scanned, and a real use case beyond static links. That use case became events: QRGen now issues QR tickets for events and lets organizers scan attendees in at the door.

Free generators hand you a static image and forget you exist. QRGen keeps every code attached to a user, a plan, and a history.
Built-in events and ticketing, not just links
Most competitors only encode URLs. QRGen can generate an entire event's tickets, each one a unique, scannable QR code.
A dedicated scanner for real-world check-ins
A purpose-built attendance scanner validates each ticket QR code at entry and logs the check-in instantly — something generic QR tools don't offer at all.
Analytics that answer "did this actually work?"
Scan tracking and attendance data give organizers a real answer, instead of a code they hope someone scanned.

Organizers create events and issue QR-coded tickets to attendees directly from the platform.
Dedicated Attendance Scanner
A purpose-built scanner validates each attendee's ticket QR code at the door and logs the check-in in real time.

Challenges & Solutions
The parts that took real problem-solving
A "free tool" mindset is hard to charge for
Plan tiers were designed around what actually justifies payment — analytics, event ticketing, and higher usage limits — rather than gating the core generator behind a paywall.
Attendance scanning had to work under pressure
At the door of an event, a scan either works instantly or it doesn't. The attendance scanner validates and logs each ticket in real time, with clear feedback for organizers running check-in.
Scan tracking couldn't slow the redirect down
Every scan is logged without adding a noticeable delay between a user scanning a code and landing on the destination link.
Outgrowing the current host
QRGen currently runs on InfinityFree, with a planned migration to Hostinger for better reliability as usage grows.
Results
- Live in production at qr-gen.page.gd, running the full signup-to-scan loop.
- Complete user lifecycle: signup, plan selection, Paystack payment, QR generation, and scan tracking.
- Full events system: event creation, QR ticket issuance, and real-time attendance scanning at check-in.
- Migration path planned to Hostinger to support continued growth.
